Arrangement and process for magnetic information storage

For reducing the requirements in terms of precision and speed demanded of the mechanical subsystems of information storage arrangements, in particular those which are compact, mobile and/or to be operated under aggressive conditions, the mechanical movement between magnetic head and magnetic coating is supplemented by the non-mechanical displacement of a magnetic reversal front, generated by controlling magnetic fields within the magnetic head. The recording operation comprises successive changes in the direction of the controlling magnetic fields with decreasing amplitude in each case, the difference between successive amplitudes representing a measure of the information to be recorded. The reproducing operation comprises a preferably constant increase in the absolute intensity of the controlling magnetic fields, taking place between changes in direction, at a rate of increase dependent on the relative speed of the movement between magnetic head and magnetic coating.
