New polycarbonate resin (I) contains a structural unit of formula (IA) and is derived from, a dihydric phenol (II) with a spiro ring. (I) also contains a unit of formula (IB) derived from a bisphenol of formula (III), R = a dihydroxy-aliphatic gp., alicyclic gp., phenyl-substd. alkylidene gp., -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, or -CO-, pref. a dihydroxy-aliphatic or alicyclic gp. esp. a gp. derived from bisphenol A or 1,1 -bis(4-hydroxy)-phenyl) cyclohexane, X = halogen or lower alkyl, p and q independently = 0, 1 or 2. The (IA) content is min. 5 mol-% w.r.t. total dihydric phenols.
