A passive metal is coated with a perfluorocarbon copolymer cation-exchange polymer and subsequently annealed. The annealed polymer coating acts as a barrier to anions which attack and breakdown the passivity mechanism of such passive metals, thereby protecting the passive metals against localized corrosion, such as crevice or pitting corrosion, caused by anionic attack.
