PURPOSE:To retard hydrogen gas evolution and to obtain an alkaline battery having excellent performance by adding a specified amount of a specific compound to zinc alloy powder used as the negative active material or an alkaline aqueous solution used as the electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A battery has zinc alloy powder and an electrolyte. The negative electrode material is formed by adding 0.001-1.0 pts.wt. compound represented by the general formula [I] (In the formula, RCO shows the residual atomic group obtained by subtracting a hydroxyl group from a fatty acid and M shows one metal of alkali metals.) to 100 pts.wt. zinc alloy powder. As the example of the compound in the formula [I], sodium oleylmethyl taurinate, sodium palmitoyl methyl taurinate, sodium stearoyl methyl taurinate, sodium myristoyl methyl taurinate, or sodium lauroyl methyl taurinate is given. By adding one of these compounds, even if the content of mercury is reduced compared with the conventional battery, hydrogen gas evolution in a battery is remarkably reduced and battery performance is increased. |
