In a document reading process which is implemented in a fax machine, the number of image elements which have changed between the data from a single line and the data from the immediately preceding line is calculated, these lines being obtained by scanning a document 2 in a main scanning direction, and for the transmission are selected the data from a single line or a specific signal which is produced by a specific code generator 12, as a function of the result of the comparison between the number of image elements which have changed and a predetermined entered value. <IMAGE>
