PURPOSE: To reserve gaseous fission products by providing an absorption casing for reactor having first to third layers for absorbingγ-rays, neutron rays, andγandβrays, respectively, with a fourth layer composed of a gas nonpermeable substance. CONSTITUTION: A reactor pressure vessel 12 including clads 18 of fuel elements 10 and control rods 14 is surrounded by a concrete shell 26. Furthermore, it is surrounded by a safety vessel 28 and contained in a reactor building 30. First lead layer 36 for absorbingγ-rays, second cadmium or boron layer 38 for absorbing neutron, and third aluminum layer 42 for absorbingγandβrays are arranged on the inside of safety vessel 28 and building 30. A fourth zirconium alloy layer 44 for reserving gaseous fission products and fifth titanium layer 32 for absorbing radiation from plutonium, in case of fast breeder reactor, are additionally provided further on the inside. The gaps between respective layers are filled with elastic materials 34, 40, 48, 46. This structure reserves and confines gaseous fission products effectively.
