According to the invention, soot is filtered off from exhaust gases by introducing the exhaust gases into a liquid bath, preferably water, by means of the apparatus for a fine distribution of gas in liquids of File No. P3902486.5 or another distribution apparatus. As a result the soot is bound in the liquid and separated from the exhaust gases and is no longer able to escape into the air and contribute to its contamination. This liquid soot filter is installed directly downstream of the exhaust gas generator, upstream of any downstream exhaust gas scrubber binding the exhaust gases with chemicals. As a result mutual contamination and mixing of soot and salts produced in the exhaust gas neutralisation are avoided. As a result both can be reused without mutual contamination.
