In a lead accumulator which is capable of delivering high currents in the cold (cold start) even over long operating times, the negative electrode is basically supplied with the necessary expander from a lignin-containing storage substance, preferably wood dust, which is nevertheless a constituent of the active mass mixture of the positive electrode and is subject to an oxidative degradation, in which soluble lignin derivatives are released, during formation and cycling. Such an expander source makes it possible to produce the negative mass without expander added and, in particular, to avoid an overdosing such as inevitably otherwise exists at the beginning of the operating period. The level of the expander supply to the negative electrode and its duration can largely be moderated by means of the concentration and particle size of the wood dust.
