PURPOSE:To allow stable operation over a long period of time with simple constitution by generating the stimulated Brillouin scattered light in which polarized light is scrambled by using an optical fiber resonator and using this light as the locally oscillated light for optical heterodyne detection. CONSTITUTION:A locally oscillated light source has the optical fiber resonator 7 and a stimulating light source 5 which generates the stimulated Brillouin scattered light by stimulating this optical fiber resonator 7. The stimulated Brillouin scattered light generated by the optical fiber resonator 7 is used as the locally oscillated light. The polarized light of the locally oscillated light is scrambled in this way and, therefore, even if the polarization state of the signal light is changed in whatever way by optical fiber transmission, the magnitude of the differential frequency component between the stimulated Brillouin scattered light and the signal light is kept always constant. The need for adopting polarized light control and polarization diversity as in the conventional method is eliminated in this way and, therefore, the constitution is simple and the operation stable over a long period of time is assured. |
