A process for filling a manually-operated pipetting device in which a piston provided to be able to slide in a cylinder of the device is first manually pushed against the force of a return spring into a filling starter position for reducing the volume of the cylinder and is returned by the force of the return spring to a noncompressed pipetting start position to fill the pipette tip applied to the pipetting device is to be improved in such a manner that contamination of the piston seal by pipetting liquid is avoided. For this purpose the filling return movement of the piston initiated by the spring force is retarded and damped over the first piston stroke return section in comparison with the remaining piston stroke in the region of the filling starter position.
