A method or reducing the signal distortion occurring in the irradiation of the outer ear by means of headphones, in which, in addition to the known graphical sound assessment by listeners by means of determination of the propogation constant, the diaphragm pulse response and the transient response of the outer ear in the case of sound irradiation by headphones is additionally used for checking the multi-dimensional reproduced sound fields artifically generated by headphones which are as natural as possible. Findings related to the ideal measure which, in particular, relate to sound irradiation defects and are obtained by measurements and which are obtained compared with the free incidence of sound at the outer ear enable a subsequent optimisation of the sound irradiation to be designed for the transmission of sound from the headphones to the outer ear by means of a suitable signal processing device.
