PURPOSE:To suppress the generation of hydrogen gas within a battery and improve battery performance by providing a negative electrode material having zinc alloy powders and an electrolyte and containing a specified compound therein. CONSTITUTION:A negative electrode material having zinc alloy powders and an electrolyte to which electrode material a compound represented by the formula I is added in 0.001-1.0 weight parts to 100 weight parts of the zinc alloy powders is provided. ln the formula I, R represents the remaining atomic group after one hydrogen atom is removed from fatty acid hydrocarbon. Examples of lead alloy powders used as the negative electrode active material include those containing a fixed amount of at least one of indium, aluminium, calcium, cadmium, tin, gallium, nickel and silver as well as lead and bismuth. Hence, the generation of hydrogen gas is suppressed while the content of mercury is reduced, and also an alkali battery and its negative electrode active material having discharge performance maintained at high level can be obtained. |
