An automatic focus adjusting device of a camera and a method thereof are provided to perform a fast and continuous focus adjustment regardless of the properties of a driving unit by using a driving unit of encoder type. An initial position of a lens unit is measured by using an encoder to detect the initial value of the encoder(601), and the initial position value of a movement target lens unit is matched with the initial position value of the measured encoder while the automatic focus adjustment is performed(603). A distance value of a subject is measured by the distance measurement sensor(605). Based on a predetermined algorithm, the displacement that a focus lens is to be moved is determined related to the measured distance value, and the focus lens is moved(607,609). The position of the focus lens is adjusted so that the position value of the moved focus lens may be equal to the displacement value(611).
