The method involves providing a set point torque (CembCns) to be applied to a coupling unit and determined from an engine speed (omega-mth) during departure of a motor vehicle. Relative error between a torque transmissible by the coupling unit and a measured position (CembPos) of the coupling unit is estimated by considering the speed, an engine torque (CmthCmm), the position and the set point torque using an estimator for providing an estimation of disturbance (demb) in the transmissible torque so as to correct the set point torque. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling a coupling unit, comprising a control device.
