A catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated hydrocarbons, all or the majority of which contain more than 5 carbon atoms, containing palladium with a promoter on a metal oxide carrier, characterised in that the promoter is a metal from subgroup 1B of the periodic system, and in that the metal oxide carrier is macroporous TiO2 , optionally mixed with macroporous CeO2 and/or ZrO2 , wherein the pore volume of the macroporous carrier is approximately 0.2 to 0.4, preferably approximately 0.25 to 0.3 ml per g of carrier and the proportion of macropores with a diameter greater than 14 nm is at least 65%.
