The element according to the invention consists in a preferred embodiment of two panes (10, 12) assembled in the manner of a composite or laminate pane, a thermally insulating layer, for example an air or inert gas layer, formed between said panes, and a sheet-like photovoltaic unit (18) which is arranged between the one pane (10) and the thermally insulating layer and which car, consist of a transparent semiconductor material. By this configuration of the element the solar energy is optimally available as light and thermal energy in accordance with its spectral distribution and after conversion by the photovoltaic element also as electrical energy.
