PURPOSE:To remarkably prolong the catalytic life and improve the result of reaction of acetone cyanhydrin with water in the presence of a catalyst composed mainly of Mn oxide to form the subject substance by adjusting the pH of the stock liquid supplied to the catalyst within a specific range. CONSTITUTION:The subject substance is produced by the hydration reaction of acetone cyanhydrin in the presence of a catalyst composed mainly of Mn oxide. The reaction is carried out by adjusting the pH of the stock liquid supplied to the catalyst to 4-8. The adjustment of pH is performed by removing or neutralizing the mineral acids in the acetone cyanhydrin used as a raw material or circulating a part of the reaction product liquid (0.5-10 pts. per 1 pt. of the stock liquid) to the stock liquid. The subject substance is useful as an intermediate raw material for methacrylamide and methyl methacrylate.
