PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for amino acids, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high yield and quality at a low cost by reacting glycolonitrile with ammonia in the presence of formic acid and a sulfite or bisulfite. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by reacting glycolonitrile with ammonia (by batch process or continuous process) in the presence of formic acid and a sulfite or bisulfite at 0-100 deg.C (preferably 80-70 deg.C). The amount of formic acid added to the system is >=0.1mol% (preferably 0.5-5.0mol%) based on 1mol of the glycolonitrile used as a raw material. The amount of the sulfite or bisulfite is >=0.001mol% (preferably 0.1-2.0mol%) based on the raw material. The glycolonitrile can be produced from formalin and hydrogen cyanide. |
