PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate raw material for polycarbonates, epoxy resins or developers for heat-sensitive paper in high yield by using a specific catalyst consisting of hydrogen chloride, metal chloride, etc., in reacting acetophenone with phenol. CONSTITUTION:Acetophenone is reacted with phenol in an equiv. amount of preferably 2-8 timed based on the acetophenone in the presence of a catalyst consisting of hydrogen chloride, a metal chloride and a sulfur-containing organic compound having mercapto group at a temperature within the range of 30-80 deg.C, especially 40-70 deg.C to afford the objective compound. Furthermore, zinc chloride is preferred as the above-mentioned metal chloride and anhydrous hydrogen chloride gas is preferred as the hydrogen chloride. Alkyl mercaptans and mercaptocarboxylic acids, are preferred as the sulfur-containing organic compound. The hydrogen chloride, metal chloride and sulfur-containing organic compound are preferably used in amounts of 0.3-5wt.% based on the reaction solution. |
