The invention relates to a belt filter, in particular a vacuum belt filter, having a filter belt (5) which can be moved in cycles through the filter vessel (1) over a sieve plate (2) or the like and having a filter pump system (10) taking off the filtrate from the filtrate chamber (4) beneath the sieve plate. According to the invention, on the filtrate side of the filter belt (5) an antechamber (17) is arranged in the feed area of the filter belt to the filter zone, to which antechamber, for the early build up of a filter cake on each fresh filter belt section, is assigned a circulation pump unit (19) by which the fresh filter belt section is coated with a filter cake before it passes into the actual filtration zone.
