A method for processing workpieces has side-by-side numerically-controlled spindles 6 supplied with tools from a common magazine 3, such that similar or dissimilar workpieces can be processed simultaneously without needing to use a fixed numerical programme sequence but flexibly in accordance with different strategies. The spindles are supplied via respective rotary tool changing devices, each device having two arms integrally together and mutually angled for removing and replacing tools. The required axial movements for tool insertion and removal are made by the spindles.
