PURPOSE:To cut quickly a pipe without requiring clamping by disposing lens for condensing laser laser light and a focus detecting mechanism for matching the focus of the lens with the circumferential surface of the pipe into a cutting head and rotating the head. CONSTITUTION:A pipe 1 to be cut is charged into a pipe cutter while swallowing a cutting head 19 and a photoconductive pipe 18. The detecting roller 28a of a focus detecting mechanism 28 is pressed by a cylinder device 30 onto the inside circumferential surface of the pipe 1. A laser oscillator oscillates laser light 24 which advances in the pipe 18 until the light collides against a reflection mirror 25, where the light is condensed to a slight area by a condenser lens 26 and is irradiated to the inside circumferential surface of the pipe 1. Laser working and assist gas are simultaneously applied to the laser light condensing part through a supplying pipe 31 to assist the cutting and to prevent scattering of molten dross to the lens 26. When the piercing by the laser light 24 is completed, a motor 29 runs and the head 19 is rotated by a reduction gear 21 so that the laser light 24 scans round the inside surface of the pipe 1 thereby cutting the pipe 1. |
