Impact absorber for motor vehicles

An impact absorber (1) of a motor vehicle is described, which is composed of a cylinder (2) which is fastened to the vehicle frame and has a displaceable piston (8). The latter separates the liquid-filled space inside the cylinder (2) into two chambers (11) and (12). The liquid flows through an axially continuous aperture (9) in the piston (8) as soon as the latter is displaced. This movement is initiated by a bumper bar (10) which is fixedly connected to the piston (8). Opposite the bumper bar (10) there is situated along the cylinder (2) a corrugated pipe section (4) which is deformed together with the bumper bar (10) to produce a barrier as the impact speed of the motor vehicle increases. This means that, in the event of a collision, the kinetic energy is dissipated by a means which is additional to the shock-absorbing aperture (9). Loading of the corrugated pipe section (4) using a liquid has the advantage that the corrugated pipe section (4) is evenly loaded, independently of manufacturing tolerances and inaccuracies. <IMAGE>
