Photosensitive photographic Ag halide (AgX) material has a base and AgX emulsion coat contg. sensitising dyestuff(s) (I) with a spectral sensitivity max. in a wavelength region longer than 700 nm and a unfluorinated betaine (II) as surfactant. (I) is a penta- or hepta-methin cyanine (IA), delta-amino-heptamethin cyanine (IB), heptamethin merocyanine (IC) or di- or tetra-methin double hemicyanine (ID) where Z1 and Z2 independently = gps. completing a 5-6-membered N-heterocycle; R1 and R2 independently = alk(en)yl; R3 = alk(en)yl or aryl; R4-10 independently = H, halogen, alkyl, aryl or alkoxy; and R6R7 or R8R9 may also = a 5-6-membered ring; R11 and R12 independently = alkyl or aryl or R11R12 = a 5-6-membered ring; Y = S, O or N-R13; R13 = alkyl; Q = a gp. forming a 5-6-membered ring; X = an acid anion; l, m, n, p and q = 1 or 2. (II) is a cpd. contg. a quat. N atom and an acid gp., pref. a carboxylic sulphonic or phosphoric acid gp. In partic., (II) is N-(3-sulphopropyl)-N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl amine betaine (IIA); alpha-hexadecyl-N,N,N-tri-methyl-glycine; alpha-decyl-N-2-hydroxyethyl-N,N-dimethyl-glycine (IIB), etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - The material has high sensitivity in the near IR region and high storage stability. It is useful for photographic films and papers, esp. in the prodn. of lithographic printing plates.
