PURPOSE: To realize compactness of a whole structure and improve degree of freedom of assembly to an engine by providing a starter motor comprising a movable idler gear moving together with a pinion gear and freely meshing with a driven gear. CONSTITUTION: One end of a starter output shaft 50 is supported by a bearing 52 in a starter drive end housing 1 fixed to a housing of a starter motor 10. A rotary force is transferred to the output shaft 50 via a planetary gear drive mechanism. A pinion gear 56 is movably mounted to the output shaft 50 via a spline gear 65. Further, a stationary pin 60 parallel with the output shaft 50 is arranged in the housing 1, and an idler gear 62 is slidably fit with the stationary pin 60 via a slide gearing 63. Then, due to the operation of a solenoid 11, the idler gear 62 is moved together with the pinion gear 56 in the same direction, and the idler gear 62 is allowed to mesh with a driven gear 100. |
