Input from a scanner (10) to a division unit (11) is broken down into distinguishable fundamental portions (12) for encoding (13) in compressed form on an optical disc (14). The compressed data are stored together with information as to position of each compressed portion w.r.t. the whole image. The data retrieved from the disc (14) are decoded (15) on commands from a keyboard (16) to feed a display driver (17) which reproduces the image on a CRT or liquid crystal display (18).
