A protective anode (sacrificial anode) (3) is arranged in the earthed water container (1) of an electric water heater. A flanged plate (4) fitted with heating elements (5 to 8) is electrically insulated from the water container (1) and is earthed via a switching contact (K1, K2) when the heating elements (5 to 8) are switched on. The switching contact (K1, K2) is formed by a first contact of a temperature regulator (10). A second contact (K3, K4) of the regulator (10) is connected to the neutral conductor (14). A low-tariff connection (16) is connected to a number of the heating elements (5 to 8) via a third contact (K5, K6) of the regulator (10). A high-tariff connection (18) is connected to the third contact (K5, K6) of the regulator (10) via a protection contact (K7) of a switching-on contactor (19). <IMAGE>
