PURPOSE:To align an axis of polarization with high accuracy by rotating a right and a left fiber so that the difference between the distances A and B of the highest brightness appearing on both sides from the center line of a fiber image is zero. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder member 34 is supported rotatably on a bracket 32, an arm 36 from the cylinder member 34 is provided with a theta clamp 38, and the optical fibers 10 and 10 are clamped to it. When the optical fiber 10 is aligned, the optical fiber 10 is rotated and observed by a TV camera 44 in a direction of theta=90 deg. to obtain the fiber image 50. The right and left optical fibers 10 and 10 are so rotated that the difference ¦A-B¦ between the distances A and B of lines 54 and 56 of the highest brightness appearing on both sides of the center line is zero.
