Compact pore-free silicon carbide moldings are produced by compressing amorphous silicon carbide powder in the absence of sintering assistants at from 1400 DEG to 1800 DEG C. and under from 100 to 2000 kp/cm 2 to give dense, glassy moldings. In a subsequent stage the resulting glassy moldings are converted into crystalline alpha -silicon carbide at from 1950 DEG to 2200 DEG C. |
