<p>The invention refers to a novel method for the preparation of 8-hydroxyoctanoic acid by reaction of 6-chlorohexanol with a dialkyl malonate ester, thermal decarboxylation of the malonic acid derivative and isolation of the 8-hydroxyoctanoic acid as the free acid or as an alkali metal salt.</p>
