PURPOSE:To allow core alignment using a fusion splicing machine of a direct core viewing type so that low-loss connection is executed by removing the front end part of a thin-film coating layer of a carbon system of an optical fiber by thermal decomposition. CONSTITUTION:The coating part 13 of the optical fiber 10 from which the coating part 13 at the terminal is removed to expose the thin-film coating layer 12 is set to an optical fiber holder 2. The front end of the optical fiber is positioned at the center of a pair of electrode rods 3a and 3b facing each other. A voltage is then applied between the discharge electrodes 3a and 3b by a discharge power source 5 by turning on the discharge switch 6a of a discharge controller 6 to generate an arc discharge 4. The front end of the thin-film coating layer 12 is applied with 500 to 1,000 deg.C heat by the discharge heat, by which the front end of the thin-film coating layer 12 is thermally decomposed and removed. The end faces of the exposed bare optical fibers 11 are butted against each other and are axially aligned, thereafter, the end faces are fusion-spliced by the discharge heat in the air. The low-loss connection of the optical fibers is thus executed by using the fusion splicing machine of the direct core viewing type. |
