A marker for an electronic theft monitoring system has an effective component of a soft-magnetic amorphous material which reacts to a magnetic alternating field, and releases the system to give an alarm signal. The components, in the form of strips, have in the operative internal mechanical stresses which, by deactivating the components, are reduceable. The component is pref a metal compound with a specified formula comprising iron, silicon, boron and carbon. The proportion of silicon is between 3 and 10 per cent, the iron complementing that proportion up to 85 per cent. The proportion of carbon is between zero and 2 per cent, the boron complementing that proportion up to 15 per cent.
