PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of textile finishing or paper processing resin, intermediate for the synthesis of pesticides and pharmaceuticals, etc. in high yield, by oxidizing an alcohol in the presence of a silver catalyst containing a specific amount of phosphorus or phosphorus compound. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde is prepared by oxidizing an alcohol such as methanol, ethylene glycol, etc. in the presnece of a silver catalyst containing <=500ppm (in terms of elementary phsophorus) of phsophorus or a phosphorus compound based on silver. The catalyst can be obtained either by mixing silver with <=500ppm of phosphorus, and melting the mixture in an inert atmosphere to obtain an alloy, or by impregnating granular silver catalyst with a solution obtained by dissolving phosphorus or a phosphorus compound in a proper solvent, and drying and calcining the impregnated product. When phosphorus is elementary phosphorus, the catalyst is prepared, e.g. by dissolving red phosphorus in an alcohol, and impregnating the solution in silver catalyst, and when it is a phosphorus compound, the catalyst is prepared e.g. by impregnating a silver catalyst with an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, etc. |
