An exhaust particle removing system for an internal combustion engine includes two filters (14, 15) disposed within an exhaust passage in series for trapping particles suspended in exhaust gas. The system also includes combustion equipment (16-20) which is disposed near the inlet of the upstream filter (14), and serves to burn off the particles deposited on the upstream filter (14). The downstream filter (15) is coated with a catalyst. The downstream filter (15) is arranged to be separate from the upstream filter (14) by a predetermined distance so that the particles deposited on the downstream filter (15) can be burned off by means of an elevated temperature of gas passing through the upstream filter (14). The length of each of the filters (14, 15) is essentially equal to or less than the diameter of the inlet of the respective filter. |
