Prepn of herbicidal sulphonylurea salts of formula (I) (J-S02-N(-)-C0-NR-B)m M(m+) (I) where M = Li, Na, K, Mg or Ca; R = H or alkyl; J = opt. substd. homocyclic gp or heterocyclic gp; B = opt. substd. heterocyclic gp with C and N ring atoms; and m = 1 or 2; comprising contacting a soln of the corresp sulphonylurea (II) in a water-immiscible halogenated hydrocarbon solvent with the corresp. alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide and separating the salt, pref. by evapn of the solvent. Prepn. of a soln. of (I) comprises contacting the corresp. (II) with an alkali(ne earth) base in a water-immiscible aprotic solvent.
