The invention relates to a method for the treatment of human females suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which involves the administration of melatonin in sufficient doses to alleviate the symptoms of PMS, alone or in combination with progestogen. The administration is carried out with an implant or with suppositories, the daily dosage range of melatonin being from about 2 mg to about 2000 mg, in about 3 to about 14 daily doses.
