Divalent hapten derivatives used for the determination of drugs having the formula I A-X-A I where A is a bonded hapten moiety and X is a bifunctional spacer having the formula II (B)m-Y-(CH2)n-Z-(CH2)n-Y-(B)m II where m is independently 0 or 1, B is (CH2)n', wherein n' is an integer from 1-4, or CO(CH2)n", wherein n" is an integer from 2-4; Y is independently -CONH-, -NHCO-, -OOC-, -COO-, -O-, -S-, or -NR-, wherein R is hydrogen or an aliphatic radical; n is an integer from 1-10; and Z is an organic residue containing one or more hydrophilic atoms, and a process for preparing such derivatives.
