PURPOSE:To discriminate whether a character is a printed letter or a manuscript, based on the ratio of longitudinal to lateral size of a circumscribed square of the character. CONSTITUTION:A binary picture element signal obtained from the scanning of an original is stored in order on a buffer memory 9. Each character is cut out at a character cutout circuit 10, by taking a series of line group including black picture elements a prescribed number or over as a character line. A cut-out character picture is inputted to a character type recognizing circuit 21 and parameter calculation circuits 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. A distance from a suitable range set to the printed letter and the manuscript is calculated from each output of the parameter calculation circuits at distance calculation circuits 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. The output of each distance calculation circuit is inputted to a discrimination circuit 22 to discriminate whether a character is a printed letter or a manuscript. Thus, the accuracy of character recognition for documents mixed with printed letters and manuscripts can be improved. |
