The beam (F) from the light source (10) may be polarised or non-polarised, monochromatic or wide spectrum, coherent or non-coherent. The beam is transmitted, via an optical channel (20), to the first (70) of two modulating elements. The first element, which is stationary, carries a modulating surface (72). The second element (62), which can be moved at right angles (M) to the beam or in relation to the fixed element (70), carries a different modulating surface. The modulated beam (F') is guided (22) to an opto-electrical transducer (30). The output of the transducer is fed to an electronic signal processor (50) which also controls the supply to the light-source (10).
