The rain water or waste water drainage system has a sump (5) in which water is collected. The sump is emptied periodically by a siphon (1) which discharges the water into a second sump (7) which is connected to the sewer (23). The siphon (1) is provided with an air vent pipe (33) and has a groove (29) formed in its wall opposite to the vent pipe (33). When the water level (h1) rises to the height of the siphon a stream of water flows along the groove (29). This stream of water flows over the junction of the vent pipe (33) with the siphon (1) so that the inflow of air is shut off. The first sump is then emptied to the lower level (h3) of the lower end of the siphon leg (11).
