PURPOSE:To obtain a superhigh speed optical switch by connecting two outputs of an optical coupler of two input ports and two output ports by an optical Kerr medium and forming an optical loop. CONSTITUTION:In an optical coupler 106 of two inputs ports 106a, b and two output ports 106c, d, two output ports are connected by an optical Kerr medium, and an optical loop is formed. In this case, a branching ratio of the optical coupler 106 to a control light is '1' to '0', or '0' to '1', therefore, a control light pulse advances at an equal speed against one light of a clockwise light and a counterclockwise light which are allowed to branch by the optical coupler 106 from a signal light pulse, and always gives continuously a mutual phase modulation. However, as for other light, it only passes each other instantaneously, therefore, it scarcely exerts an influence. In such a way, a superhigh speed optical switch for executing complete switching by low input power without being influenced by a disturbance can be obtained. |
