The liquid crystal display (LCD) device e.g. for (T.D.M.) operation includes the Y strip-line electrodes (signal electrodes) (33) and X strip-line electodes (scan electrodes) (34) formed on the upper and lower substrates (not shown). The image elements (pixels) i.e. liquid crystal zones on the intersection points of the X- and Y-electrodes are switched 'on' or 'off' in order to indicate letters. The electrode surfaces and the free substrate surfaces are provided with orienting layers so that a helical structure having a given twist or transposition of over 90 deg. in the direction of thickness is formed, specif. 96 to 108 deg. The angle of intersection of the absorption axes of the polarisation plates on the top and bottom substare is 63 to 73 deg..
