PURPOSE: To manufacture the rolling mill cylinder with a long life by blowing a nonoxidizing gas jet to a cylinder surface together with irradiation by a laser beam, marking and settling continuously a metallic covering. CONSTITUTION: The cylinder surface is intermittently irradiated by the laser beam, and the nonoxidizing gas jet is blown toward this laser beam irradiation area. For this blowing jet, CO2 , Ar, He, N2 and a mixture of N2 and maximum 5% hydrogen, etc., are proper. In this way, the marking consisting of regular and very small holes is applied to the cylinder surface. Successively, on the cylinder surface having this marking, the metallic covering is settled by, for instance, electrolysis. This metallic covering is composed of a Cr layer 5 to 20 μm in thickness preferably. The life of the rolling mill cylinder, which his obtained by this method, can be remarkably improved. |
