PURPOSE:To form dull seam patterns having no anisotropy between circumferential and axial directions on a roll surface by synchronizing the rotating phases of a chopper and the roll at an integer ratio with respect to the set value of the number of dull seams of the roll and rotationally driving both. CONSTITUTION:While the surface of the roll 2 rotated by a motor 18 is irradiated with the laser, in the form of pulses, from a laser beam oscillator 12 past the chopper 14 rotated by a motor 16, the chopper is moved at a prescribed speed to form the dull seam patterns consisting of the many dull seams on the roll. The number of the dull seams per one rotation of the roll which is the natural number corresponding to the pitch most approximate to the desired dull seam pitch is set in the dull-working method for the above-mentioned roll. The rotating speed command values of the chopper 14 and the roll 2 of the integer ratio at which the rotating phase of the chopper and the rotating phase of the roll synchronize are set with respect to this number of the dull seams. The chopper 14 and the roll 2 are rotationally driven via velocity controllers 28, 30 by a command device 26 in accordance with both these command values. The dull seam patterns in which the phases of the circumferential and axial directions of the roll 2 coincide with each other with high accuracy are formed in this way. |
