PURPOSE: To improve a signal-to-noise ratio by forming a soft magnetic layer which is anisotropic and is parallel with a head plane and setting the relative magnetic permeability pμx of this layer in the moving direction of an information carrier smaller than the relative magnetic permeabilityμy of this layer in the direction perpendicular to the head plane. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic head 1 is so constituted that the magnetic reluctance in the soft magnetic layer 3 in the direction perpendicular to the head plane is smaller than the magnetic reluctance in the moving direction of the information carrier 2. Then, the magnetic reluctance between the information carrier 2 and the magnetic head 1 is also smaller than the magnetic reluctance in the respective perpendicular moving directions so as to prevent the excess leakage magnetic flux loss and, therefore, the magnetic flux generated from the information carrier 2 flows through the magnetic head 1. Namely, if the soft magnetic layer 3 is such anisotropic layer that the magnetic permeabilityμy exceeds the magnetic permeabilityμx , the resistance that the magnetic flux encounters during the flow from the information carrier 2 to the magnetic head 1 is decreased even with respect to the resistance that the magnetic flux encounters in the direction perpendicular to this direction. Consequently, the best signal-to-noise ratio is obtd.
