FLUORINE-CONTAINING CARBON FIBER CAPABLE OF READY ELIMINATION OF FLUORINE

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject carbon fiber having a high fluorine content and capable of ready elimination of fluorine by plasma treatment of a phenolic resin-based active carbon fiber at the room temperature using CF4. CONSTITUTION:An active carbon fiber, preferably a phenolic resin-based active carbon fiber is used as the precursor and subjected to the plasma treatment at the room temperature using CF4 to obtain the objective carbon fiber having a high fluorine content and capable of ready elimination of fluorine where >=5wt.% fluorine is distributed almost only on the surface of the above- mentioned fiber. As the above-mentioned fiber can readily eliminate fluorine, the subject fiber is very useful as a source of fluorine supply, a glass treatment and a composition for a water-repellent material respectively free from danger of fluorine. The above-mentioned fiber is also free from damage of the characteristics of the carbon fiber itself because of the presence of fluorine only on the surface.
