PURPOSE:To obtain the metal matrix composite material which can easily be manufactured at low cost and having excellent specific strength and wear resistance by incorporating aluminum oxide coated potassium titanate fiber as a reinforcing material and light metal thereto as matrix metal. CONSTITUTION:The surface of potassium titanate fiber such as K2Ti6O13 is coated with aluminum oxide or aluminum oxide and silicon oxide. As the above fiber, the one having about >=5mum average fiber length and about >=10 average aspect ratio is preferably used. Furthermore, the quantity of the oxide to be coated is preferably regulated to about 1 to 30wt.% independently expressed in terms of Al2O3 and SiO2. The coated fiber is incorporated as a reinforcing material and light alloy such as Al alloy and Mg alloy as matrix metal to obtain the metal matrix composite material. At this time, the volume ratio of the matrix light metal is preferably regulated to about 95 to 60vol.%. In this way, the metal matrix composite material having excellent strength, elastic modulus and wear resistance and effective for the application to a sliding member such as a piston ring can be obtd. |
