Head restraint (1) for a motor-vehicle seat which is supported on the upper region of the backrest (3) via a holding device (2). The head restraint (1) has a padded element (6) which can be shifted relative to the remaining part of the head restraint (1) and which is automatically shifted by an adjusting device into a supporting position, in which it approaches the head (7) of the seat user from the side or from the rear, and is then locked to the head restraint (1), if a sensor, which detects vehicles and/or obstacles, emits a release signal shortly before a collision with a vehicle or obstacle.
