In a shaft sealing system for sealing off rotating shafts relative to sealing liquids contaminated with solid particles, the protective ring arranged axially at the front, on the liquid side of the lip sealing ring, consists of a rotating, radially projecting flinger ring connected rotationally to the shaft and of a filter ring which is inserted into the housing, is stationary in operation and surrounds the flinger ring with axial and radial clearance, so that, under operating conditions, the liquid to be sealed off is directed towards the filter ring, where the solid particles are deposited. The liquid cleaned at the filter ring can form a lubricating film of liquid at the sealing gap of the sealing lip without solid particles being deposited there and causing wear to the sealing lip. <IMAGE>
