A skid (5) of the type used to support a workpiece or component, e.g. vehicle body shell, during a surface coating treatment can acquire hard deposits (4) of material that have to be removed before further use. The skid is located on a cleaning table (7) that is moved relative to a laser (3) that separates the material at the interface. The surface profile characteristic of the skid is measured by a sensor and the values are stored in memory. The values are then used to control the movement of the head in the vertical plane to effect accurate removal. ADVANTAGE - Simplifies removal of deposit from surface of work skid.
